Project Investigators
Marion Clement is currently pursuing her master’s degree in wildlife biology at Clemson University, SC. She is the lead investigator for the Barred Owl Project. Before joining Clemson, Marion was a natural resources biologist at Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the executive director of the Maryland Bird Conservation Partnership. She has over five years of working with wild birds and has worked on Barn Owls, Northern Saw-Whet owls, Ospreys and various hawks, waterfowl, songbirds and pelicans.
Kyle Barrett is a professor at Clemson University and is Marion Clement’s graduate advisor. Dr. Barrett is an ecologist who primarily works with vertebrates in aquatic habitats. His research focuses on the response of species to large-scale stressors such as climate change, invasive species, and land use change. Dr. Barrett is interested in linking research to conservation and management decisions, so he frequently works with a number of federal and state agencies. He is a member of the Ecological Society of America and The Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles.
David F. Brinker is a regional ecologist with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and master bander for this project. He began banding raptors at the Little Suamico Ornithological Station in 1975, and has been banding Northern Saw-whet Owls in Maryland since 1986 and at Assateague Island since 1991. He founded Project Owlnet in 1994. In addition to his professional duties, he studies Northern Goshawks in West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania and has experience with RF and satellite telemetry and a variety of sampling methods (blood, feathers, etc.)
Addie Carter is a technician on the Barred Owl Project and will soon be graduating from Clemson University with a Bachelor in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology. Addie has been working with captive raptors since 2013 at the Center for Birds of Prey in Charleston, SC. Addie is interested in promoting public education, awareness and appreciating of raptors and in reducing human-raptor conflicts.
